Maurice Griffin

Gospel singer Maurice Griffin brought his passionate songs of praise to an audience of millions when he competed on the second season of BET’s gospel talent reality show Sunday Best. Griffin made it to the show’s final rounds and parlayed the exposure into a healthy career for both his music and ministry. In addition to his role as a worship leader for the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Griffin released multiple albums and appeared on the Billboard charts with his 2019 single “Prove Me (I’m Yours).”

I Am Somebody: 1 Peter 2:9Maurice Griffin was born on a naval base in Virginia to military parents, but he spent his formative years in Chicago. It was there that Griffin would first become involved with gospel performance, working with the world-renowned gospel choir New Direction. Times weren’t always good to Griffin, and shortly before he was picked as a participant for BET’s Sunday Best he had been homeless on the streets of Chicago. Things turned around for him in a big way after the TV series exposed his talent to multitudes of new fans, and he moved around from Florida to Texas to Los Angeles over the next several years, building communities of faith and releasing albums and EPs of his own solo music. His 2011 album I Am Somebody: 1 Peter 2:9 was followed by second full-length My Holiday in 2013 and the EP-length Believer in 2014. With the rise of social media, Griffin used the Internet to further his message, posting videos of songs, sermons, and everyday activities to engage with his followers online. His 2019 single “Prove Me (I’m Yours)” peaked at number 26 on Billboard’s gospel airplay charts in the summer of 2020, and set the scene for Griffin’s next album, After God’s Own Heart, due out later that year.
